National Information Exchange Model (NIEM)

How many people out there have heard of the NIEM? It is the national informaiton exchange model. A wonderful goal - to have a metadata standard for exchanging data between organizations. Finally we can agree that it is PersonBirthDate and not DOB or BirthDate or birthData or DateOfBirth etc. What should the role be of federal agencies in helping us adopt these standards.
